Nintendo Wii Vitality Sensor

Wii Vitality Sensor

First came Wii Fit and you canceled your gym membership, but now it looks like Nintendo are set to get rid of doctors as well with their new vitality sensor. This little device was revealed at E3 2009 and it can measure your heart rate (ideally while excercising). Nothing on pricing/release date yet but do you think that this will somehow integrate with Mario Kart? The angrier you are, the faster your kart goes?!

Review: Oral-B Triumph vs Sonicare Elite Electric Toothbrushes – Power vs Sonic

OralB Triumph with Smartguide

The Oral-B Triumph line is a popular line of power electric toothbrushes that we have featured before, and we thought we’d bring you up to date with the latest news and provide you with an Oral-B-Sonicare comparison; this is mainly a Triumph vs Elite showdown. We had previously reviewed the Triumph 9400 power toothbrush and featured the Triumph 9100 power toothbrush (pictured). If you’ve done searches, you may have also come across many other Oral-B Triumph model numbers, but they all feature the same toothbrush but just in different bundles (ex: additional toothbrush heads, carrying cases, etc.).

Another very popular line of electric toothbrushes are the sonic Elite line from Sonicare, a Philips brand. We’re going to take a quick look at how the Oral-B Triumph 9100 compares against the Sonicare Elite e9500 – both very highly rated toothbrushes in their respective ranges. So let the Sonicare vs Oral-B battle begin! …

20 Geeky Vacuum Cleaners

USB Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

One of our readers sent us a list of 20 geeky vacuum cleaners and my, what a list! Everything you could possible think of is here from the vac that sounds like Chewbacca coming in at number 20 to the retro, handheld, USB powered one at number 1.

There’s even a very nice Halo-style cleaner and a few, very odd, vacuums for cleaning various body parts and then, worringly, for dealing with human waste! My personal favorite is the Dyson Airblade  – not really a vac, but it will seriously dry your hands amazingly quick. For those of you who haven’t tried it, it’s something to do before you die!

Take a look at the full list: Top 20 Geek Vacuum Cleaners

Powerlung Sport – Lung Capacity Exercise machine

Powerlung Sport

I must say I’m disappointed – I read the word ‘Powerlung’ and the first thing that came to mind was some sort of metallic lung implant/exoskeleton that meant you could live under water for 2 and a half weeks or something, but no such luck. Nonetheless, Powerlung make a range of accessories to help your breathing and expand your lung capacity for various exercise routines and musical capabilities.

The Powerlung Sport is Powerlung’s top of the range lung capacity expander for competitive athletes who need strenuous training, but many other products exist in the field for those who don’t think they need such a workout. No chemicals are used in your lung improvement; all you do is inhale through the tube, which has a strong resistance to it, and then exhale through it, to make your lung stronger. Doing this for under 10 minutes a day should improve your lung capacity greatly.

Strengthening lung muscles and increasing capacity should give you loads of benefits including a reduced heart rate and you should feel less breathless at times when you need your air.

GfG’s Article Recap for Week Ending May 29, 2009

This week saw us yearning after some ‘appliance 2.0’ technology including ‘connected’ washers/dryers and a freezer failure sensor kit.

We reviewed a poster printing service which we thought was pretty good.

The Easy iPod Media Sharer‘s name says it all – useful family gadget. We do love our Gmail; their new lab is cool – an Inbox Preview feature.

We feel that President Obama is taking the right approach in creating a Cyber Czar position.

UVSunSense Wristbands – tells you when to reapply sunscreen

UVSunSense Wristband

Skin Cancer is becoming a bigger problem – but here’s a little gizmo to help you reduce your risk. Presenting the UVSunSense Wristband. While there are other devices that warn you of excessive exposure to UV radiation, this one will actually tell you when you need to apply more sunscreen. Think of it as a cheaper, and perhaps cooler version of the Portable UV Monitor.

When you’re applying your sun screen, simply take a moment to apply a little to your wristband as well, over the words, and when they change color you know you need to reapply. For a simple (and perhaps eventually live-saving) gadget, a mere $6 will buy you 7 wristbands – enough for a good long stay on the beach!

Now we just need to design one with an alarm in it so that it can wake you up need to reapply when you’ve dozed off.

FINIS Aqua Pulse – Swimmer’s Heart Rate Monitor

FINIS Aqua Pulse

With the world swaying more and more towards one where people like to stay in shape, more products are appearing to help you out. Here’s where FINIS have found their niche – they’ve developed a heart-rate monitor to measure your body’s exertion and exercise intensity while swimming. They claim that other products aren’t quite up to the job when it comes to swimming as they keep falling off.

Aqua Pulse works by picking up your heart rate from your earlobe (slightly unusual – have to try that one out sometime) and then tells you the results by sending sound waves through the bones in your ear, as you wouldn’t be able to hear it through a normal speaker. It appears they’ve thought of just everything with this. Hit the read link for a full description and feature list.

Inflatable Backyard Water Park

The Backyard Inflatable Water Park

What could anyone child possibly want except a 10.5 foot inflatable water park for their back garden? It includes one large slide and one smaller one, to keep a small party entertained for a decent amount of time; all you need is a simple garden hose to power the sprinklers.

This toy would be perfect for a summer’s day to help cool down your kids, without having to take them to a probably busy, and more dangerous, public pool or swimming bath. The toy is simple to get working; all you need to do is plug in the air blower, wait for it to inflate, and then plug your garden hose into the sprinkler!

#CES09: Schwinn Tailwind eBike promises faster charging, longer lifecycles

Schwinn showed off the Tailwind again at ShowStoppers. An electric eBike hybrid that can be ridden as either a conventional bike or in electric motor-assist mode, the Tailwind is a lightweight aluminum alloy frame bicycle. We saw the bike in action and it’s pretty zippy.

What’s new about this electric bike is the brand new ion battery developed by Toshiba that has the following benefits:
fully chargeable in 30 minutes (which is 10-25% the time it takes current bikes)
greatly increased lifecycle – approx 2000 charge/discharges compared to 300 to 1000 for others
15 to 25 miles distance per charge
safe and environmentally friendly

Pricing: $3200 with the replacement battery going for $500-$600. There are other Schwinn eBikes available starting around $1400.
