Seagate Barracuda 7200 750GB 7200/16MB SATA300 Hard Drive

Seagate Barracuda 7200 750GB 7200/16MB SATA300 Hard Drive

It may seem a little strange to feature a hard drive, but bear with us for a second. While we’re all aware that capacity has been growing while cost per GB has been dropping, Seagate really launched one out of the park with a 750GB hard drive. Think about it – almost up to 1 Terabyte in one container! And that’s coming soon too. But here’s the other remarkable thing about this drive: not only is it huge, the performance is also amazing. You might be tempted to think that it would suffer, but think again. Test after test has shown this Barracuda to have a lot of bite. Here are some specs to chew on: 7200RPM spindle speed, average seek time of 12.6msec, top external transfer rate of 300Mbps, and here’s what you can store (approximate numbers): 318 two-hour DVD-quality movies or 1000 hours of VHS-quality video or 660 days of around-the-clock MP3 audio or 276,500 vivid digital photos!

SlingPlayer Mac… finally!

SlingCommunity’s Editor, Matt Whitlock, had a chance to catch up with Brian Jaquet of Sling Media while at the Digital Life show in New York in hopes of getting some information on the upcoming SlingPlayer for Mac OSX, and included in the video interview is actual footage of SlingPlayer Mac in action! As you’ll see, SlingPlayer Mac is indeed very real, and though missing a few features, it’s looking like the Mac community has a real treat in store for them.

No, this is not a hoax… Sling Media actually is releasing Mac software!

teamslide: Web-based Presentation Application

German company, telepark, is billing its teamslide application as the 1st remote slide presentation software that needs no download and works across all platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux) and on any device as well as being the to integrate Powerpoint slides with Skype. Although I can’t vouch for the ‘1st’ part, I can say that this is a cool application, another example of Web 2.0 at work. Essentially, you can create presentations and have them be viewable in a web browser anywhere. You can choose who you wish to invite to your presentations and the whole thing is clean and pretty slick with some AJAX-based functions thrown in. The best part is that they offer a free plugin to convert your Powerpoint slideshows into teamslide format. Pricing starts at $99 for the single-presenter mode. You should check out the demo – you’ll instantly get what this does. Here’s a PDF version of the press release.

Review: GoodSync Data Synchronization Software

Review: GoodSync Data Synchronization Software

Slashdot ran an article last year titled “Condensing Your Life on to a USB Flash Drive?” and inspired me to modify how I use USB flash drives. I now use USB flash drives as portable backups in case of a disaster. While that may sound drastic, I didn’t think so as I had already started planning on using USB drives in this manner after Hurricane Katrina. While I created a portable backup solution using a couple of USB flash drives (one for personal information and one for work information), I also created a file synchronization nightmare. If I modified files on a USB drive, I had to make sure I copied it over to the folder in “My Documents” where I usually work on the file and vice versa. GoodSync uses a synchronization algorithm to synchronize data between PCs and USB drives. While other synchronization software simply copies files from place to place, GoodSync offers true bi-directional synchronization preventing data loss. Read the rest of the review to see how the Geeks feel about GoodSync’s synchronization algorithm.

Memeo iExtend (Turn your iPod into a PDA)

Memeo iExtend (Turn your iPod into a PDA)

Attached to your iPod at the hip? Yet you want to have PDA-like functions without lugging around another device? Then try out the iExtend from Memeo. It’s a piece of software that syncs up things like your e-mail, notes, calendar, contacts and even files with your iPod. Memeo also touts iExtend as a great mechanism for using your iPod as an alternative to a USB memory stick. One of the software’s features is something called SmartPick which tracks and backs-up files on your computer to your pod. This is a pretty slick piece of software for the price.
