Some Universities Issuing Cell Phones

I realize that I may be partially dating myself here, but something I didn’t have to deal with when I was in college was my cell phone plan. That means that I also didn’t have to deal with any privacy issues related to having a cell phone. Privacy issues related to having a cell phone? Yep, students at Montclair State University in New Jersey are issued a mandatory cell phone which can also track their location on campus. Obviously, this is not meant to ‘cramp their styles’, but as a proactive approach to student safety. Some universities are dropping their landline programs outright due to the growth of the cell phone; while others are actually launching their own wireless plans and university-branded cell phones (yes, also with the ability to track location). Obviously, there’s the question of cell phone reliability particulary in case of emergencies, but the rise of wireless services will soon dump the era of landlines to the sidelines, making it a moot point.

Skype Alert on EPG screenOregan Networks, a software provider that licenses its embedded solutions to convergence carriers and Consumer Electronic brands, today announced availability of a new feature for delivery of Skype message alerts and caller ID to TV-centric devices, aiming to further enrich the end consumer’s experience and interactivity. Oregan Media Browser, the embedded software product of the company, enables ‘ubiquitous’ Internet and IPTV services and is based on the established open standards for web content authoring and distribution.

The new feature enables a scenario, where consumers can be notified of Skype messages and calls whilst watching digital broadcast or IP television, with options to dismiss or respond without leaving the sofa.

Review: SENA Blackberry 8700 Leather Case

Nokia to compete with Blackberry

I wonder what took Nokia this long to launch a product to rival Blackberry‘s line. At any rate, they did, and the E60 and E61 started shipping recently, while the E70 is set to ship in late May. One cool new feature is that they are able to accept SIP-based phone calls (Internet-based, essentially). Perhaps these new phones may take Nokia back to the top of the cell phone heap. Remember when cell phone rings were defined by the default Nokia ringtone?

Jabra BT160 Bluetooth Headset

Jabra BT160 Bluetooth Headset

Now you can be stylish and annoying at the same time by permanently attaching the Jabra BT160 Bluetooth Headset to your ear! Ok, headsets are useful and have their place such as in a car while driving to free up hands. However, the Geeks just think you look, well… stupid, while walking around all the time with a bluetooth headset on. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should (remember the early days of the web when the blink tag was implemented and everyone put that on their pages… just not cool).

Now that I’m off my soapbox, the Jabra BT160 has 33 different faceplates that you can change according to your mood. That’s decently cool.
