Recap of 2006’s “12 Gizmos of Christmas”

PS3 With over a dozen shopping days left to Christmas Day, let’s give you a look back at the “12 Gizmos of Christmas”, so you can get some great tech ideas for your loved ones. Starting at #12, GPS Devices, we’ll countdown in rapid succession to the #1 pick by a mile, Video Game Consoles. Just click on the item to see a more detailed write-up on it.

#12, GPS Devices
Ever since the US government made GPS signals available for civilian use, GPS devices have taken off. This year was no different in terms of popularity. GPS has found some interesting uses including in digital cameras, for noting where you were when you snapped the pic, in sports and fitness devices for mapping your exercise routes, and even for game playing such as in geocaching.

“12 Gizmos of Christmas”: #1, Video Game Consoles

After people have fought, rioted and been shot while waiting in lines for the mythical PS3 machines during the great 2006 PS3 Crime Spree, we had to make Video Game Consoles the #1 most requested and wished for item this season. While the PS3 garnered a lion share of the press regarding crazy people just needing some Sony gaming power, the Wii managed to outsell Sony hands down. Even the older XBOX 360 got in the act bringing Amazon to it’s knees for over 15 minutes… of course the XBOX 360’s sold out in only 29 seconds.

“12 Gizmos of Christmas”: #2, HDTV

Sure we featured video products as our #4 spot in the survey, but HDTV televisions have broken out into their own category this year. We knew HDTV was going to be a best seller this year way back in January at the CES show. Every time you turned around at the show, you’d bump into HDTV products.

Without further ado… let us present you with the three top selling items in this category so you too can start to check out newscaster’s pores and other skin imperfections on actors and actresses!

“12 Gizmos of Christmas”: #3, Portable Audio Players

The iPod (or Portable Audio Player) category has been dethroned! For the past two years, Portable Audio Players (well, we called the category MP3 Players two years ago) has been in the top spot of the “12 Gizmos of Christmas”. This year the category drops to #3.

The Geeks are still quite impressed with how this category remains towards the top of people’s wishlists. After all, doesn’t everyone have a portable audio player by now? Possibly, but apparently people want the newest, higher capacity, smaller footprint and slicker looker device.

“12 Gizmos of Christmas”: #4, Video

Video products come in as #4 on our survey of most wanted items under the Christmas tree. Oddly enough, none of the three items we picked to represent Video products include a VCR.

The first item we feature made a big splash earlier in the fall with it’s $800 price tag and is TiVo’s first product in the HD realm. That’s all you get for now… you’ll just have to wait for the other two products to be revealed later today.

“12 Gizmos of Christmas”: #7, Digital Cameras

Digital Cameras seem to always make the “12 Gizmos of Christmas” feature year after year. This year digital cameras dropped one spot to #7 in our series, but we don’t see this group disappearing from our series in years to come. With several manufacturers no longer updating their film-based cameras, digital cameras have overtaken their analog counterparts… not just in popularity but in quality of output as evidenced by professional photographers switching in droves to various digital SLR models.

“12 Gizmos of Christmas”: #8, Portable Video

Portable Video made it to our 12 Gizmos of Christmas again this year, but not quite a top 3 finish. This is not to say that we don’t have some smoking hot items on our dreamlist this year. On the list is at least one item from a perennial top finisher and another from a competitor that would like to clean their clock, and just may, given how much money they have in the bank. If those hints weren’t enough, stay tuned over the next half a day to find out.

“12 Gizmos of Christmas”: #9, Laptops

After dropping off the list last year, the Geeks believe the 9th most requested item wished for this year will be laptops. Laptops had a big year this year as dual-core processors were added, Apple turned to Intel and the addition of UMPCs. We’re starting off our list with one of the most requested laptops currently… the 13″ Black Macbook. I’m dreaming of a white black Mac Christmas!
