GfG Article Recap – Week of Mar 20 2009

Here is last week’s featured gadgets and news items at Gizmos for Geeks:

To start off the week, we took a look at Legacy Locker – a rather needed innovation that allows you to pass down important account details for your online ‘assets’ in the case of your death.

We found two interesting pieces of software: Claymation’s Stop-Motion Studio Tool that allows the user to make their own stop-motion movies and Palringo – a mobile messaging service that allows you to mix up all the major IMs with and chat to groups all in one.

Dell just rolled out their Adamo Notebook which is essentially Dell’s response to the MacBook Air – thin & stylish.

Rebit’s 160GB Automatic Backup Device makes it quite easy to backup your data regularly.

Got $40k laying around? Get a Novelquest Emporer Workspace – a very high end workspace that puts you inside the spine of what can only be described as a giant dinosaur. On a more practical note, the Just One Club Card’ allows you to put all of your loyalty cards’ barcodes onto just one card.

Sony got together with Google to put 500,000 free public domain books onto their eReaders. You can save money (possibly up to 90%) on international calls by using Vopium on your mobile.

In perhaps a sign of things to come, a new magazine from Popular Science called the Genius Guide is being rolled out online only.

Truphone – softphone for cell phones

Truphone is a free software app for your mobile phone that routes your calls over the Internet. These calls are made using VoIP using your phone’s WiFi connection and even Nokia and Blackberrys can make calls via Truphone’s network without a WiFi conn.

In case you’re wondering what’s in it for Truphone, their business model is to charge lower rates than your mobile provider, particularly for international calls or calls made when you’re roaming abroad.

The gPhone from Google is a Go

According to one blogger‘s inside source at Google, the ‘gPhone‘ (not its actual name), or Google smartphone is for real, and could potentially be out in Q1 2008. Here are some of the features that it’s speculated to have: Google Maps with GPS, Google Talk, VoIP, Gmail, Google Productivity Apps, essentially all of the Google Suite. It’s supposed to be based on a modified Linux kernel (sweet!). I wasn’t crazy about the iPhone, although the touchscreen is really nice, and the browser makes surfing the web on a phone painless. However, hand me a Linux-based device that will be hacked to kingdom come, and I’ll jump at that.

There is (has been) a lot of speculation that Google is/isn’t going to jump into the smartphone business, and my take is that they will. Why not? Considering that something like 90% of their income is from online advertising, what happens if that market drops out from under them? They need to diversify, and what better way to get people seeing their ads than having them be connected to their site and apps all of the time?

Review: nxZEN nX6000 Bluetooth Headset

nX6000
I recently tested out both the nX6000 (pictured) and the nxZEN 5000 VoIP for use with my Palm Treo 700P. This will primarily be a review of the 6000, as I had too many issues with the nxZEN VoIP. I’ll draw comparisons between both models from time to time. Gennum’s nxZEN line of bluetooth headsets offers noise-cancelling as their primary distinguishing feature, and of course offers many of the typical features as other BT headsets.

Intro: For starters, I was impressed by the packaging of the nX6000, which did not include any blister packaging (something I really look for now). The 6000 came with a USB and a car charger, an adaptor for turning the USB cable into a wall-powered charger, manual, different sized ear hooks and earbuds, and a very useful plastic quick reference card. Every gadget company out there should consider including quick reference cards with their products.

What is Net Neutrality, and why should I care?

Mad Mike from NonPCGeeks asks the question about what is Net Neutrality and then answers why you should really care. Here’s an excerpt:

Well, this is a good question, and (like all politically heated questions) it depends a lot on who you ask. To some people, Net Neutrality means that companies that provide internet connectivity (both your local ISP and the big backbone telcos) will treat every packet flowing through their lines the same, no matter what the content, be it game data, bittorrent, streaming video, VOIP, forum posts, or standard browsing. To other people, Net Neutrality means that packets will be given equal access on the network, no matter who the provider is (for example, the ISP won’t block Yahoo but will block Google.)

Netgear SPH101 Skype Wi-Fi Phone

Netgear SPH101 Skype Wi-Fi Phone

In line with our CES theme, the Geeks thought we’d pick another CES Innovation winner from last year… the Netgear Skype Wi-Fi phone. This phone will allow you to call anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world for free without a PC. You can make and receive Skype phone calls where you have access to a wireless Internet signal.

You can even connect to any landline or mobile phone outside the Skype network for pennies per minute. The Skype Wi-Fi allows you to manage your contact list and display who is available to talk directly on the phone’s screen. Finally, all calls are secure and encrypted with WEP and WPA-PSK Wi-Fi security.

Skype is the world’s fastest-growing Internet communication offering allowing free voice, video and instant messaging communication between users of Skype software of over 136 million registered users.

CES 2007: CES Unveiled

Last on the triple of press events on Saturday was CES Unveiled, where approximately 60 companies showed off a handful of their products. Most of these companies had also won a 2007 Innovations award for one or more of their products. The Innovations awards are given out by the CEA for the best engineered and designed products. We can’t say that we say anything that we thought was groundbreaking, but we found a couple little gadgets that we really liked.

We’ll highlight some of the products and companies that caught our eye.

Samsung Q1

Samsung Q1

After several days or weeks of preparation for Thanksgiving including “mom” waking up at 4a to put the turkey in and you setting the table to make everything look like a Norman Rockwell drawing, the feast is over after only ten grueling minutes of fighting over who gets the turkey leg and turkey neck (trust me, the neck is where it’s at). Everyone retires to the couch in the family room where American football is playing.

As you start to doze off you wish you had a small handheld tablet type of device so you could quickly check the latest Black Friday online ads or your gmail… that’s where the Samsung Q1 comes in!

While I’d recommend more than 512MB, I’ve used and enjoyed the little guy and for someone looking for a UMPC, the Q1 seems to be the standard.
