Circuit City Says Farewell

After turning down a Blockbuster offer that was a premium to their then valuation back in April, Circuit City has fallen on harder times and announced January 16th, 2009 on their website that Circuit is going out of business. This affects 567 stores across the US and will result in 34,000 jobs lost. Canadian Circuit City stores will remain in operation.

Unfortunately, Circuit City’s close did not come as a surprise as the economic environment continues to worsen. Having watched big box companies including Sharper Image, Bombay and Linens and Things close their doors and others scaling back on the number of stores including Starbucks and Home Depot, I was actually amazed that a company like Circuit City was still alive.

Circuit City made the decision to pull out of the area I live first (Atlanta, GA) and about a month ago I visited literally a week before the official closing of a nearby store. Walking with my iPhone in hand, I compared prices of the heavily marked down merchandise (30%-40%) with e-tailers including Amazon and Buy only to discover I could get the same merchandise for the same amount or even less with free shipping from the e-tailer! I walked out of the store with nothing in my hands. In fact, I’ve only walked out of that store with some Sony memory once before because I needed it at the last minute. After getting home and checking the same memory on Amazon, Circuit City’s price was double what I could have gotten the exact same product at Amazon if I had planned better.

Consumers are not stupid and with better tools such as the Internet and smartphones people search for the best deals rather than simply showing up at Circuit City to purchase a new laptop or TV. Smart consumers come armed knowing which product they want that contains the feature set they want and know how much they can purchase it for online. If a consumer does decide to grace your brick and mortar store with their presence, you sure as hell better treat them with respect and present them with excellent customer service. Retailers cannot afford to piss off one customer as that information can spread virally via the Internet.

The above applies doubly to retailers in the tech market (gadgets, computers, audio/video), as this class of consumers — our readers for example — are especially adept at using tools to find the best deals.

Big box stores need to rethink their strategy or just become another entry in Wikipedia.

#CES09: Ten One Design’s Gadgets Fix Fustrations of Capactive Touch Screens

Ten One Design launched several products lately including the Pogo Stylus in September and the Pogo Sketch less than a month ago.

Ten One Design’s gadgets help consumers that are frustrated by the capacitive touch screens of the iPhone, iPod touch and MacBook due to consumers with fingernails that are a bit too long to accurately use the touch screens or due to fat-fingering.

Pogo Stylus is the world’s first iPod touch- and iPhone-Compatible Stylus while the Pogo Sketch provides drawing capability using the latest multitouch MacBook trackpad. The trackpad is actually transformed into a pen tablet for premium drawing programs and other artistic applications.

The Pogo Sketch’s tip is made of advanced material that acts as a bridge by transferring the signal from the display to the user’s hand.

Both the Pogo Stylus and Pogo Sketch are available from the Ten One Design website for starting at $14.95.

#CES09: Powermat says wireless charging mats are close

Powermat has a wireless charging solution that uses, you guessed it, a mat that you just place your gadgets on, and voila!, they’re charged up. It uses magnetic induction just like many of the other (promised) solutions. They have a wide range of products ranging from the small, folding to the large desktop variety. Apart from the added price, the only 2 drawbacks that I can see is the limited number of devices that they support, and that you need some kind of device adapter and/or support pre-built-in.

Devices: iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, Razr, GPS unit, handheld game, laptop computer. Not yet available, but expect $100 mats and $30 chargers.

Phanfare even has a Facebook applications that allows you to show your photos and video albums to your Facebook friends.

Finally, utilizing your Phanfare account you have safe and secure online storage of your video and photos, album security and privacy, fullsize archival originals. Phanfare uses Amazon’s S3 storage and provides free storage up to 1GB and unlimited storage at $54.95 per year.

“Consumers are buying millions of external drives to store their personal content, yet extending this content outside the home is overly difficult.,” said Daniel Putterman, chief executive officer of Cloud Engines, Inc. “Pogoplug makes this possible for anyone, with no network setup or configuration.”

Sure, this capability exists today… if you are a geek, but the Pogoplug is designed for simplicity. Setup takes a few seconds and requires no configuration. Once you register the product at my.pogoplug.com, the Pogoplug is online and ready for use.

Don’t worry, the product offers plenty for the geek too! Developers can use Pogoplug’s open Web services interface to build new features. Soon, Pogoplug will connect directly to popular sites that offer backup, file synchronization, photo printing and more.

The device is compatible with any external USB 2.0 hard drive or memory stick. Content is accessible with any Web browser, Microsoft Windows® Explorer, Mac Finder, and through the Pogoplug iPhone application.

HP TouchSmart tx2z Tablet Notebook with Multitouch

Buy Now!
HP’s tx2z series of tablet PC notebooks has a cool new feature – multitouch. Just like on the iPhone, you can use 2 fingers to perform different actions; for example, stretching out or zooming in on a photo or other object on the screen.

The tx2z is no slouch either despite its seemingly small stature (starting under 5lbs with a footprint of 12×9″). You can get up to a 2.4GHz AMD dual-core Turion, 8GB memory, a 64MB ATI 3200 graphics card and up to a 400GB SATA hard drive. Not too shabby.
