USB 802.11n/g WiFi Adapters

Belkin Wireless N+ Adapter

Most modern laptops today have their WiFi adapters built in, but if you have an older laptop and would rather not shell out just to get WiFi, here are some USB WiFi adpaters models that will help you get online without wires.

The fast…

If it’s speed you’re after, the Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n USB adapter (~$75) shouldn’t do you far wrong – the adapter takes 802.11n connections (as the name suggests), is MIMO (multiple input, multiple output)  enabled, but is also backwards compatible with wireless-g and 802.11b routers. It comes with a very pleasing desk stand should you wish to use it for your desktop.

See Timeline of Events on Google News

news-timeline-of-eventsI usually have no reason to visit websites to read news as I take it all in via RSS feeds using Netvibes (fantastic reader by the way), but now I have a really cool reason to visit Google News. They’ve launched a new feature called “Timeline of articles” which shows you events and other related news items related to a story chronologically.

Tesla announces their 2nd all-electric car

Electric car maker, Tesla Motors, unveiled their 2nd all-electric auto this week, the Model S. Their first model, the Roadster was (and still is) sold for over $100k. Despite the price, there is still a waiting list for these cars.

The Model S will have a more down-to-earth price tag of $50k (with an approximate federal tax credit of $7,500). This may still seem like quite a hefty price tag as compared to hybrids, but bear in mind that this is an all-electric car, so no more buying gasoline, although you will probably be faced with a stiff battery bill every 3 to 5 years.

Notable in this announcement is the fact that Tesla is actually expanding and growing (building a new plant in particular) despite the downturn for the other traditional automakers. Good for them – there is hope yet for a green revolution in transportation yet and sooner than may have been first imagined.

Sylvania LED Ecolight Water Powered Shower Light

Feeling green while you’re in the shower? Hopefully it’s not because you’re dirty, and you just like helping the planet out. If you’re an environmental freak like some of my friends are, then this wireless and energy-efficient shower light is just the thing for you.

Made by Sylvania, the shower light is powered solely by water. Of course, that’s probably a good thing considering lots of electricity from your home outlet and water usually don’t mix together too well – something will usually end up burnt!

The cool thing about this shower light is that the light color will change depending on the temperature of the water. That way you won’t ever get the shivers if the water is too cold, or hop out of the shower screaming because it was burning hot. Intuitively, a red light means hot, and blue means cold.

Additionally, there is an on and off switch for the light if you don’t care for it. It appears to be a pretty easy install, with many reporting it taking only a few minutes.

Stats:

  • 85 psi maximum water pressure
  • Blue scale for temperatures less than 78.8 degrees
  • Red scale for temperatures more than 105.8 degrees

Bedol water-powered clock

Ditch batteries altogether, and run this digital clock on water. Yup, water (and some lemon juice). This green-friendly clock uses its built-in electrodes to sip whatever power it needs from the acidic water.

Just one caveat – you need to change the water every 5-7 weeks. Seems like a small price to save landfills from batteries. Comes in 4 different colors.

Wicked cool. I’d just like it to include an alarm clock, but I’m guessing the power requirements for that are too high for mere lemon water to meet.

Tetran’s Spikey Cable Winder.

Headphone cables tangling is one of the worse things when all you want to do is just listen to your player. This is a problem that has happened at least once to everyone who uses headphone. You place the headphones into your purse or pocket and then when you take them out, you have to sit and untangle them before you can use them. It is a hassle and can be solved by just one simple addition. The addition is known as a Tetran’s Spikey Cable Winder.

These cable winders are simply small, cute spiky balls. They come in a variety of colors, which are pink, green, yellow or orange. These are simple to use, all you have to do is wind your headphones cable around the ball and place the ear buds in the ball’s mouth. There is a removable chain that can be attached to any key rind or belt loop. This makes it easy to keep the ball close to your player. These can be used for other things, such as a foot messenger or a stress reliever, but were designed for use on headphone cables. These would make a great gift as well for that person that is always untangling headphone cables.
