Review: My Pad Leather iPad Case

my-pad-ipad-caseStudio Credence sent us a sample of their take on the now very common iPad case – this one very closely resembles a classic leather-bound book that you may find on a bookshelf of an “old money” household. Named the My Pad iPad Case, the My Pad is in fact made with leather and suede, and very snugly fits a 3rd-generation iPad. No, it won’t fit a 1st generation iPad, something I wish more manufacturers would explicitly point out.

Microsoft Surface tablet

Why the Microsoft Surface Will Leave iPad Users Drooling

Microsoft Surface tabletMicrosoft recently unveiled its Surface tablet, a sleek in-house design running Windows 8 and soon to be available in two models: Surface and Surface Pro. The basic model will run Windows RT, a lighter, tablet-oriented version of Microsoft’s new OS that focuses on Metro apps, while the Surface Pro will run full-fledged Windows 8.

While the company didn’t announce specific release dates or pricing, the Surface will release alongside Windows 8 — probably around October — at a price “competitive with similar tablets,” with the Surface Pro dropping shortly thereafter, likely in the Ultrabook range of $900 to $1000.

Should you start saving your pennies? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

The Many Masks of the iPad

The iPad. Or the iPad2 or now, just iPad…again. Yeah, it’s really an iPad3. No matter which generation—one through three—we are talking about, the iPad has created a revolution in the world of portable and Internet-connectable devices. The name Apple is recognizable enough as it is, so when great technology comes with it, the name gets even stronger. Nowadays just saying that someone owns an Apple product automatically brings up the status of the product. The iPad in particular is the king among kings in the tablet world. Some may disagree. Some may like other tablets better, but if you look at the numbers, Apple has the largest market share. But the iPad has some interesting non-tablet uses, masks if you will. Let’s take a look at a few of those.

OnLive on an iPad for gaming

The iPad as a Gaming Console

OnLive on an iPad for gaming

The impossibility of technology can often be well…seemingly impossible. There has been some talk about OnLive. I say some because many have deemed what OnLive claims to be able to do impossible. Many gaming sites such as EuroGamer don’t believe it is possible, but with the testing of an avid gamer on Popular Science, Dan Nosowitz says that it is.

OnLive now offers the same abilities it once claimed to be available on the iPad, Honeycomb tables—like the Motorola Xoom—the Kindle Fire and Android smartphones. So what does that mean?

Addicted to the iPad?

Throughout my life I’ve been a short-term memory gadget lover (luh-vah). When I first get my hands on a new gadget I act like Lenny Small from Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men as I love and hug my new gadget almost to the point of killing it (how many mice did Lenny go through by the way?). The initial excitement of the new gadget tends to wane as time progresses to the point I typically run across the gadget a year after purchasing wondering what the hell I was thinking when I thought the gadget would be useful in my life. With that said, I’ve run across a few winners that coincidentally tend to winners in the overall consumer market but I would venture to guess for every 25 gadgets I buy, I may have 1 gadget winner that I’ll still be using a year after purchase. I might have a gadget problem.

Apparently, sometime in the past year and a half I managed to become totally dependent on my iPad. How did this happen? Sure, the iPad is cool but a coolness factor alone won’t hold my attention for a year and a half – I’m slightly immune to cool, after all I’m a geek. So why did I become addicted to the iPad?

What’s The Difference Between an iPad and an iPhone?

Here’s another back-to-basics article that will straighten out this question once and for all.

If you type “What’s the difference between an iPad and an…” into Google, it auto-suggests that you mean “What’s the difference between an iPad and an iPhone“, which implies that there are more than a few people searching for the answer to just that question. And is it turns out, there are more similarities than differences which makes it a fairly valid question.

MyWi App: Save Money on iPad 3G, Buy a Wi-Fi iPad and Tether to your iPhone

If you want an iPad with 3G but don’t want to pay the extra money then you can tether it to your iPhone and use your iPhone’s unlimited data plan. The app to do this is MyWi and allows you to use your iPhone as a 3G modem for your iPad.

If you hadn’t guessed by now, this only works on Jailbroken iPhones so there is a risk involved. The app costs $10 and comes with a 10 day free trial.

Nighty Night! HD iPad app

Review: Nighty Night! HD iPad Bedtime App for Kids

Nighty Night! HD iPad appAs the dad of a one-year old who seriously dislikes going to bed, I thought I would take this bestselling app for a spin. Nighty Night! HD is essentially an interactive bedtime book for toddlers aged 1-4.

The app built especially for the Apple iPad helps kids learn about your run-of-the-mill farm animals as well as preps them to go to bed by ‘helping’ the app turn off the lights, all the while, the 7 different animals make their noises and move around.
